Nanchang University (NCU) is a comprehensive university listed among the “World First-class Disciplines” in China’s “Double First-Class” Initiative. NCU, as a whole, falls into the category of the First-Class Universities Construction Project of Jiangxi Province.
The university currently has 42 teaching institutions and 92 undergraduate majors, covering 13 disciplinary categories. 18 subjects rank among the top 1% of ESI in the world, with the subject of Food Science and Engineering ranking in the top 0.1911% . The food science discipline ranks 8th in the “US News- Best Global Universities Rankings”.
The main campus of NCU has 4,198 staff members, including three academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and two academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. The main campus of NCU has 36,700 full-time undergraduates, among whom 1,300 are overseas students or students from Hong Kong, Macao SARs and Taiwan,19,500 graduates of all categories, among whom 130 are overseas students or students from the above-mentioned regions.
The College of Food Science and Technology (CFST) has established the Department of Food Science and Engineering, the Department of Food Nutrition and Safety, and the Department of Food Fermentation and Bioengineering.
CFST now has 82 full-time teachers, including 45 professors and 26 associate professors. Over 67.9% of them have more than one year of foreign study or work experience. Currently, there are about 2714 students, of which master's and doctoral students account for more than 55%.
The Food Science Discipline of Nanchang University has been ranked 8th globally in the "US News Global University Rankings" and 7th globally in the "ARWU World University Rankings by Subject". As of March 2026, the agricultural science discipline at Nanchang University (with a focus on food) entered the top 0.1911‰ in the ESI global rankings.
